Daikokuten
Daikokuten is played with 49 cards, consisting of a set of 45 kana cards, either hiragana or katakana,
and 4 animal or Buddha picture cards.
The character "n" is not used.
Rules
First, deal 7 cards to each of the 4 participants, and have one card placed in the discard pile.
Players take turns discarding cards, and the first player to discard all their cards wins.
To discard a card, one of the following conditions must be met:
- The discard pile and the card in your hand have the same vowel (a-o)
- The discard pile and the card in your hand have the same consonant (a,k,s,t,n,h,m,y,r,w)
- A picture card has been discarded from the discard pile
- The card in your hand is a picture card
Cards that do not meet any of the conditions cannot be discarded.
If there are cards to discard, discard them. If there are no cards to discard, draw a card from the deck and the turn moves to the player to the left.
If you discard a picture card, you can force any other player to draw a card.
However, you cannot use a picture card when you are down to the last card.
If there are no more cards in the deck, shuffle the discard pile and place it back into the deck.
Game Points
[Check the Discarded Cards]
When it is your turn, click on the discard pile to see the cards that have been discarded so far.
As the deck cards decrease and the discard pile cards increase, the entire deck will gradually become visible.
When there is only one card left in the deck, the only card that is invisible to the player is the one from the deck, and all the others are the cards of other players.
In other words, only at that moment can you guess what cards the other participants are holding.
Also, even while the game is in progress, there are only a few vowel and consonant cards left in the discard pile, so if you discard a card with the same vowel or consonant, the chances that other players will not be able to discard their cards will increase.
[Utilizing the ya and wa rows]
Compared to other consonants, the ya row [y] and wa row [w] have fewer cards that belong to them, so it will be more difficult for other players to discard cards if you discard one.
Therefore, if you have a [y] or [w] card, it is more effective to discard it after your opponent has few cards left to hinder them.
[Utilizing picture cards]
Since picture cards can force your opponent to draw cards, it is effective to use them when your opponent has few cards left and you are likely to win.
However, if you use a picture card, the next player can discard any card.
Therefore, if you use a picture card on the player to your left, they can discard the card they drew the next time, so it is not very effective.
[Interfering with the player to your left]
The probability of being able to interfere with the opponent with a card you discard is
Left > Opposite > Right
This is because the further in the turn the more likely the player in front will discard a card.
For example, suppose you discard a card [wa], which is a consonant [W]. If there are already many vowels [A] in the discard pile, the interference effect of [wa] will be high, but if a vowel [A] other than [W] is discarded, the binding effect of [W] will be lost, and subsequent players will be able to discard cards more easily.
In other words, the player who can most easily control the increase or decrease of cards is the player to his left, and it is more effective to indirectly make other players draw cards by using picture cards.
[Intentionally drawing a card]
The player who discards a card first in Daikokuten wins, so it is better to have as few cards in your hand as possible.
However, the fewer cards you have, the fewer options you have for discarding, making it more difficult to take control of the game.
Also, when other players use face cards, they tend to target the player with the fewest cards remaining.
So, in some cases, you may want to devise a strategy of drawing extra cards to reduce the risk of having a face card used on you.
